Get All Decked Out for the Summer

June 1, 2010

Although it may be hard for some to believe by looking at me, I really do enjoy the sun.  In my opinion, there’s nothing better than kicking back for an afternoon on a patio and enjoying a refreshing beverage and some great company.  While Vancouver does offer some amazing restaurant patio opportunities, I’m a huge fan of going on a mini-break in my own ‘backyard’.  I’ve got the whole set-up: south facing patio, outdoor sectional with throw cushions and a skookum new BBQ.  With the background music flowing, I swear I can close my eyes and pretend I’m at a tropical resort.

Traditionally, people tend to spend the majority of their time at home in their kitchens and/or living rooms.  However these days, the backyard (or patio/balcony) is dominating as the favourite place for cooking, entertaining and relaxing.  Homeowners are bringing all the comforts of home outside by creating multi-purpose outdoor living spaces that function as an extension of their home.  And on any budget, the opportunities are truly endless with what you can do:

  • Outdoor kitchens
  • Fire pits or fireplaces
  • Dining areas
  • Outdoor ‘living rooms’
  • Custom lighting
  • Water features
When designing your outdoor space, you really want to think about its location and how you want to use the area: Dining Al Fresco, Private Oasis or Patio Party?  With careful planning and consideration, your outdoor living space can be just as impressive as your home.   Here are some Items to consider:
  • Patio location: Remember to think about sun and shade.  If you don’t want to be eating your dinner with the intense sun beating down on you, you may want to consider adding an umbrella or planting some small trees.
  • Patio purpose: Relax? Entertain? Cook? Privacy? All of the above? This will help you determine what your ‘theme’ should be (sorry guys, I’m in marketing and I love themes!)
  • Patio design: How do you want to decorate? Hedges, fencing and plants can provide privacy and act as a sound buffer.  Flowers are an easy way to add colour and contrast – hanging baskets can make a high impact.  Water features are soothing and relaxing, while soft lighting and fragrant candles can enhance an intimate and special evening.
  • Patio budget: How much do you want to spend?  From Canadian Tire and IKEA to Pottery Barn and Restoration Hardware, there’s something that works for everyone’s wallet.  Looking online is an excellent resource.
  • Patio regulations:  If you live in a multi-family development, be sure to check with your strata regarding any restrictions and bylaws that may be applicable.

So get outside and enjoy yourself!  We need to capitalize on our rain-free days.  Throw a patio party with your friends and neighbours - click here for some great party ideas.  And of course, always remember to wear your SPF.
