Smaller spaces are in high demand and one of today’s favoured home choices due to the increasing costs of home ownership. As baby-boomers trade in large family homes for smaller, uncluttered spaces, and young professionals seek affordable living in minimalist condos and lofts, small spaces are becoming a way of life.
Homes are being designed with open concept layouts in order to create living spaces that offer flexibility and functionality. In many cases, traditional living and dining rooms are being transformed into one space that allows for eating, entertaining and relaxing. And just because your space is small, doesn’t mean you can’t host a large party.
These smaller spaces present an opportunity to get creative with your space by incorporating multipurpose pieces into your home. Items that function as a table/storage/seating are great options and now available at many major retailers. Try using an ottoman or two (complete with storage) in place of a more traditional coffee table that can double as seating during your next party. Here’s a great option from Moe’s Home Furnishings. Another unique ottoman is this one from Bo Concept that transforms from coffee table to cot; perfect for when an out of town guest arrives unexpectedly at your doorstep.
When furnishing a small space, the main trick is in the proportion and scale of the pieces you choose. A few of my favorite suggestions for making the most of small spaces are:
- Add a mirror to reflect light and give the illusion of a larger space. Glass and chrome finishes are also great for light reflection.
- Low profile furniture with clean lines allows your eye to travel over the pieces without interruption.
- Choose custom pieces that maximize space and storage. Entertainment units that disguise electronics are gaining popularity and many beds now offer storage underneath the mattress. EQ3 and many retailers are offering options in their stores.
- Don’t let vertical space go to waste. It draws the eye upwards and makes a space feel more expansive. Using it is practical, as it can provide display space for art, books or personal items.
- Create a base with neutral colors, and add accents with bold wallpapers or color to accentuate your personality. A small wall is a great opportunity to do something impactful without being overwhelming.
- Keep space uncluttered – a small space is a great opportunity to purge unwanted items and keep only those you truly love and use.
