Coquitlam has developed into one of the most livable areas of Metro Vancouver — and for good reason! The northeastern area of Coquitlam which includes the Westwood (Town Centre) and Burke Mountain neighbourhoods boasts almost every possible amenity — abundant restaurants, fantastic shopping, major grocers, quick and easy access to lakes, outdoor recreation, and new schools. Plus, with the arrival of the Evergreen Line in 2016, Coquitlam will soon benefit from one of the Province’s biggest commitments to transportation improvements.
Westwood started to transform about 20 years ago, becoming the new home of Coquitlam’s City Hall, the Town Centre stadium, the Coquitlam Aquatic Centre and the Evergreen Cultural Centre — all built around Lafarge Lake, along with some residential developments. The introduction of the West Coast Express and the completion of Douglas College (David Lam campus) in the mid-90s created even more opportunities for this neighbourhood. In 2001, Coquitlam Centre underwent significant expansion and continues to attract big retailers like Target to what is now the third-largest commercial node in the Lower Mainland. Several major residential developers are currently developing and actively selling new homes around Coquitlam Centre such as Bosa Properties (Evergreen), Polygon (Windsor Gate), Intergulf (Grand Central), Onni (1123 Westwood), Unimet (Levo) and Cressey (MOne, MTwo, MThree).
Burke Mountain, just a five minute drive northeast from Coquitlam Centre, has also been extremely active in the development process. Wesbild, the major land developer, has been working closely with the City of Coquitlam since 2002 to create this vibrant new community known as “The Foothills”. Currently 40% complete, the area will be home to 5,000 residents with plans for eight schools, a community centre, several parks, Partington Village shopping centre, and other walkable amenities. Several well-known developers such as Mosaic Homes (Roxton, Riley, Solo David), Polygon (Tyneridge, Farrington), MorningStar Homes (Summerton, Partington), Foxridge Homes (Burke Mountain Heights) and Mission Group (Secret Ridge) are all actively building or have recently completed hundreds of new townhomes, duplexes and single family homes in the area.
