Smart Solutions for Small Spaces

January 16, 2014

There has been a lot of discussion recently surrounding small spaces — from micro lofts to laneway housing, many of us are choosing to live in smaller homes. When MAC works with our developer-clients to design floorplans and furnish display suites, we’re always looking at ways to make the spaces as functional as possible. From custom built-in furniture with hidden compartments to easy decorating ideas, here are a few easy tips to help you make the most of your space in 2014:

  • Choose neutral colours. From paint to furnishings, you can make a room appear larger while giving it a warm and modern feeling. Use accent colours sparingly to add just a punch of colour. There are a lot of great furnishings stores in Vancouver to inspire you — and at a cost that won’t break the bank. (A few of our favourites are in the South Granville area!)
  • Mirrors can be a great way to make a space feel larger. Not only do mirrors reflect light, making a space feel brighter, but a great mirror can also add a classy touch to your home.
  • Extend the height of your cabinetry as high as (aesthetically) possible. Not only will this give you extra storage space, but it will give the illusion of extra height. Custom wardrobes and shelving are the best bang for your buck in a small home. There are do-it-yourself options at stores like IKEA, but many other companies, such as California Closets — or one of our favourites, Resource Furniture in Vancouver — will build and install it for you.
  • A consistent floor material throughout your home will create a more seamless flow. We prefer a laminate or engineered hardwood that you can carry right through your kitchen and bedroom/sleeping spaces.
  • Look for furniture that has multiple functions or can be easily stowed. Bosa Properties recently introduced “BosaSpace” at their Surrey development. Here, beds transform into sofas and kitchen islands transform into dining tables for eight! Whether your home comes included with these features or you invest in them after the fact, such innovations are amazing ways to make your home adaptable to any occasion.

Small spaces can be practical, functional and comfortable. With the right décor, choice of furniture and use of space, we hope your new years resolution will make you feel organized and clutter-free in your home for 2014.
